Since the late 1970s, a systematic collection of ground deformation data at Vulcano Island has been carried out by the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (formerly Istituto Internazionale di Vulcanologia – Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche).
A first EDM network was installed in 1975 and covers the entire island of Vulcano and the southern part of Lipari island. All benchmark of this network consist in concrete pillars. There are 6 pillars on Lipari and 8 on Vulcano.
GPS technique replaced the EDM one and currently, at least one GPS survey per year is carried out on this network.
