Etna and Stromboli update, 10 January 2013

During the night of 9-10 January 2013, vigorous Strombolian activity started within the Bocca Nuova, Etna's largest summit crater, following three months of quiescence. The source vent is the same that was the site of several episodes of similar activity between July and October 2012. At Stromboli, since 23 December 2012 there have been repeated overflows of lava from the crater terrace, feeding small flows in the northern and northwestern portions of the Sciara del Fuoco.
