ATTIVITÀ DELL'ETNA, 10-31 DICEMBRE 2015
Dopo l'intensa attività eruttiva nella prima decade di dicembre 2015 alla Voragine, Bocca Nuova e al Nuovo Cratere di Sud-Est (NSEC), il protagonista per diversi giorni è stato il Cratere di Nord-Est (NEC). Nella notte del 9-10 dicembre, si è osservata a più riprese una modesta attività stromboliana dal medesimo cratere, con ricaduta di bombe incandescenti sul fianco esterno del suo cono, ed abbondante emissione di cenere vulcanica. Nei giorni successivi, si è osservata una graduale diminuzione dell'emissione di cenere dal NEC. Nel tardo pomeriggio del 13 dicembre è avvenuta una serie di emissioni di cenere dal NSEC, che sono cessate dopo alcune ore; infine la Voragine è stata sede di due brevi emissioni di cenere nella giornata del 18 dicembre. Dal pomeriggio del 18 fino al mattino del 28 dicembre, non si è osservata alcuna attività eruttiva sull'Etna.
Una nuova serie di emissioni di cenere è iniziata alle ore 10:00 UTC (=ore locali -1) del 28 dicembre dalla bocca eruttiva posta sull'alto fianco orientale del NSEC (vedi l'immagine a sinistra, registrata dalla telecamera di sorveglianza visiva sulla Montagnola, EMOV). Queste emissioni sono cessate nel pomeriggio dello stesso giorno, però durante i giorni successivi si sono osservate piccole e sporadiche esplosioni dalla medesima bocca eruttiva sul fianco orientale del NSEC.

After the intense eruptive activity during the first ten days of December 2015 at the Voragine, Bocca Nuova and the New Southeast Crater (NSEC), for a few days the main focus of the activity shifted to the Northeast Crater (NEC). During the night of 9-10 December, there were several episodes of modest Strombolian activity from the latter crater, and a few incandescent bombs fell onto the outer flank of its cone; this activity also generated abundant ash emissions. The ash emissions from the NEC gradually diiminished over the next few days. On the late afternoon of 13 December, a series of ash emissions started from the NSEC, which ended a few hours later; finally, the Voragine produced two brief ash emissions on 18 December. From the afternoon of 18 December until the morning of 28 December, no eruptive activity occurred at Etna.
A new series of ash emissions started at 10:00 UTC (=local time -1) on 28 December from the eruptive vent located high on the eastern flank of the NSEC cone (see image at left, recorded by the visual surveillance camera on the Montagnola, EMOV). These emissions continued intermittently until the afternoon and then ceased, but during the following days, very minor, and sporadic, explosive activity continued at the same vent on the east flank of the NSEC cone.
